Micro Lesson #2: Phase 2
1. Instructional Decisions/Teaching (InTask Standard #9): Discuss the implementation process and describe.
- What went well and what didn't go well during the implementation of your lesson?
- I think my lesson went well. One thing that didn't exactly pan out how I wanted it to was the duration of the lesson. However, keeping that in mind that this lesson is designed for third graders, I think the time limit and the amount of tasks during this time limit were appropriate. Since I was teaching to a group of my peers, it is automatically an easier task for them to accomplish during that time frame. One thing I would change in this lesson is including more modeling. I think it is important for students to see things modeled visually and explicitly so they understand the expectations of the activities.
- How well was the alignment to objectives and standards maintained?
- My objectives and standards were very well aligned. Each objective was drawn from the Arizona Standards and matches the criteria the students are being assessed on in this lesson.
- Describe any modifications made during the implementation of the lesson?
- During the implementation of this lesson, I did not make any modifications. However, if I were to make modifications for this lesson, I would have a back-up or extension activity just in case students finish early. However, considering the age of the grade level this lesson is intended for, I doubt that the majority of my class will finish this activity way before the 30 minutes is up.
2. Mechanics:
- What technologies did I use (for the teacher and the learner)?
- During this lesson, I utilized the Chromebooks, an online bar graph creator, and Google Forms. The Chromebooks and online bar graph creator are for the learners to utilize. The Google Form is for the learner and the teacher. The online bar graph creator is a manipulative for students to use to create bar graphs based on their survey data. The Google Form is a way for students to publish their work and a way for the teacher to assess students learning.
- How were the technologies used (by whom and in what manner)?
- The technologies used, as mentioned above, were Chromebooks, an online bar graph creator, and Google Forms. The online bar graph creator was for students to use to understand the different components of a bar graph, experiment with different strategies, and see data represented visually and be able to answer questions based off of a visual representation. The Google Form is for students to publish their responses, which provides a way for the teacher to assess student learning.
- My lesson was too short because the tasks were tasks that my 20 year old peers were able to accomplish in 15 minutes. However, the activities I designed for my lesson are developmentally appropriate and timely for the age and grade level for this lesson.
3. Assessment of Learning (InTask Standard #6): Refer to Assessing Student Learning
- 2 Digital Artifacts
- Describe your students' level of success in achieving the standards and objectives for your lesson based on your assessment.
- I think my students were very successful in achieving the standards and objectives for my lesson. Based on this student's responses above, she would receive the following grade: 19/20. She only lost one point because she answered one of the one-step "how many more" questions incorrectly.
- Describe the level of success you had in teaching the lesson
- I think I taught the lesson well. Obviously I did not meet the time requirement, however, actually working with the students and developing the content knowledge went well.
- My classmates agreed. One classmate suggested that I even spread this lesson over a longer period of time so its not information overload. Another suggested an extension activity, for students who finish quickly and need a further challenge. They thought technology was incorporated well into the lesson and the technology used made sense with the content of the lesson.
4. What did you learn from designing and teaching this lesson and how will you use this in the creation of future lessons/learning activities?
- Overall, I learned about really creative ways to incorporate technology into a math lesson. I think there are a lot of interesting and innovative ways to incorporate technology and it was really informative to practice it in a classroom setting. With some revisions and adjustments, I think this lesson would work well in a classroom if there are technological resources available.
