Philosophy of Education and Incorporating Technology into Classrooms

Educational Philosophy
As a future teacher, I want to inspire my students to think critically and learn through inquiry. I want to provide equal and equitable access to learning opportunities for all students, because I believe every student deserves an authentic education. I want students to know that learning is challenging and hard, but that is okay. My goal is to create a classroom that is an authentic learning environment where students are comfortable and able to be courageous in their learning. I love being an advocate for students and watching their minds develop while learning new things. Education is one of the most powerful tools someone can have to navigate through life and it is pretty awesome that teachers get to be there to support students' experiences in learning.

Further, I want my learning community to be able to work together to investigate and explore their thinking together. Collaboration and communication are important skills I want to students to develop in my classroom since students can learn a lot from each other. As the students' teacher, I want to encourage students to create respectful and positive relationships with each other. The classroom should be a safe and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable and secure to take risks in their learning. I think it is difficult for students to feel comfortable sharing their ideas if they don't have respectful or positive relationships with each other or with their teacher. When building a relationship with my learning community, I think it is important to make curriculum relevant and meaningful to students’ lives. As much as it is my classroom, I want students to know that it is their classroom too and I want the atmosphere of the classroom to reflect the individual students' lives and our community.

My Experiences with Technology
Since I grew up in the age of technology, I have had a lot of experience with it. With that being said, I am still quite challenged with it on occasions. I have developed many troubleshooting skills and know how to adapt to new technology when I encounter it. Growing up, I didn't have internet access until my first year of high school. When we got a working computer in my home, it was a PC.  I never really experienced any other forms of technology until I was in college. I still use a PC computer on a regular basis; however, in my home there is an iMac Desktop. While I am mainly familiar with PC, I dabble with different Apple products quite a bit. In classrooms, my school had SMART boards which has allowed me to be quite familiar with the uses of it. During my practicum experiences, I have gotten to experience various programs used on iPads and other tablets.

What I Think of Technology Integration
To me, technology integration means incorporating various forms of technology into lessons to enrich a students' learning. An example of this is using the internet in classrooms for research on a certain topic or theme. Another example is showing digital images, graphs, charts, or even showing a video to students. It benefits students by because it can help develop their pre-existing skills, such as problem solving and critical thinking, by using technological resources. In addition, it can make learning in the classroom more relevant to their lives since they are in the era of technological innovation.

Technology in My Future Classroom
In my classroom, I hope to incorporate technology frequently if I have the resources to do so. I want to use interactive games, simulations, and online educational programs to enrich their learning. I would like to use a SMART board because it is really nice to see content represented visually in various ways. Since the students I will be teaching will have had grown up with technology, I want to incorporate it into lessons where it is relevant and beneficial to both the students' learning and the lesson.
